Sainsbury’s opens the UK’s first ever Meat-Free Butchers

Just in time for World Meat Free Week, Sainsbury’s has announced it is opening the UK’s first ever Meat-Free Butchers in Bethnal Green Road, London. The Meat-Free Butchers pop-up, selling plant-based alternatives to the traditional meaty sausages, burgers, mince and more, will be open 21st-23rd Jun.

At first glance, the three day pop-up shop will look no different than a traditional meat butchers. But the sausages hanging in the window will in fact be the entirely vegan ‘Shroomdog’ sausages, and the mince will be made from pea protein.

The in-store butcher will be specially trained for plant-based cooking, sharing recipe advice and tips to help customers get involved in World Meat Free Week, which encourages people to try more plant-based foods.

Boasting over a dozen high quality fresh foods, customers of the East-End ‘Butchers’ will get to choose a cut of the best boneless bites, before the food is weighed and wrapped as in a traditional store.

From the famous Sweet & Smoky BBQ Pulled Jackfruit and Cumberland Shroomdogs, to the brand new Veggie Ribz and Moroccon Vegbabs, customers can get their hands on these moreish meat alternatives, all for a discounted price.

Hungry visitors will not only be able to buy the plant-based, raw ingredients for their dinner but will also have the chance to taste many of the delicious products entirely for free.

This comes as Sainsbury’s has seen a 24% increase in customers searching for vegan products online, and a 65% increase in sales of plant-based products year-on-year – with sales having doubled in the last year compare to the previous year. However, many are still daunted by the prospect of cooking with plant-based foods.

Buyer for Sainsburys, James Hamilton said: “Whilst we’re seeing a huge climb in sales of our plant-based foods, we know from conversations with customers that there is a sense of trepidation about cooking with them. So, our Meat-Free Butchers has been launched to encourage people to get up close to the products, try what they like and take home some valuable cooking advice and recipe inspiration.

We have carefully selected the products on offer from the growing range of over 100 plant-based products now available at Sainsbury’s, so customers are in for a real meat-free treat when visiting the butchers!”

When: This pop up will be open to the public 21st-23rd June, from 11am – 8pm on Friday, and 10am – 8pm on Saturday and Sunday.

This is a non-ticketed event open to all.
