The Hot List: 5 To Watch For This July

1. Kallø Veggie Cakes

Kallø’s organic rice cakes and stocks are two of my storecupboard staples.  So I was really looking forward to try out Kallø Veggie Cakes. Available in two flavours: Beetroot & Balsamic and Spinach & Pesto, they are the latest savoury additions to Kallø’s healthy snack range.

High in protein and fibre while being low in fat and calories, Kallø Veggie Cakes are made from peas and lentils instead of rice. With 100% natural ingredients, they also contain no artificial colours, preservatives, or flavours. Gluten-free, they are suitable for vegetarians, vegans and coeliacs.

The verdict was unanimous. 5 stars all around. They are really tasty and we enjoyed both flavours on their own or with toppings such as my homemade hummus or courgette dip. The kids have a slight preference for the Beetroot & Balsamic which has a bit more tang and have already asked to have some in their lunchboxes when they go back to school!

Verdict: ★★★★★

2. Whole Earth

Whole Earth’s Chocolate and Hazelnut Peanut Butter could be my new guilt-free pleasure. Made without any refined sugar and simply sweetened with dates, this limited edition spread has 80% less sugar than the standard chocolate spread.

Probably more of a grown-up indulgence in our house as the kids were disappointed that it was not “sweet enough”. Personally, I have really enjoyed as an addition to porridge, smoothies as well as in yoghurt and fruit bowls.

Verdict: ★★★★✰

3. OGGS® Aquafaba

As many of you probably know, OGGS® makes a delicious range of vegan cakes that are free of eggs, dairy and nuts. Their secret ingredient is aquafaba (a.k.a chickpea brine) which, thanks to its high protein content, is a fantastic egg substitute.

OGGS® Aquafaba comes in a ready-to-pour 200ml carton, which is the equivalent to four eggs and can happily be stored in your cupboard for up to 12 months. The packaging is FSC sustainably sourced and fully recyclable.

I always save canned chickpea brine to make recipes such as vegan cakes, meringues or mayonnaise. Sometimes it sits in the fridge for a while and I end up throwing it away. While my first option is always to use the leftover brine from a can, having a ready-to-use pack is a really good alternative.

Verdict: ★★★★★

4. Bright Barley

Bright Barley is on a mission to reintroduce the nutritional and environmental benefits of barley, one of the oldest cultivated grains. Although barley is the world’s fourth-largest crop grown, only 2% of global barley crops is used for direct human consumption. This, in spite of the cereal having so many nutritional and sustainable benefits to offer.

Bright Barley has just launched the first barley ‘mylk’ drinks in the UK, available in three delicious flavours: Salted Caramel, Chocolate and Coffee.

They contain all-natural ingredients with no preservatives and are a source of low-fat fibre. Bright Barley’s dairy-free shakes are high in calcium, providing 50% of the recommended daily intake, with added vitamins D & B12.

Made with organic barley, grown on UK farms and ground at Shipton Mill, Bright Barley has no hidden land use, water or food mile excesses. The drinks are packaged in recyclable, paperboard Tetra Pak cartons made from renewable FSC material.

Bright Barley’s dairy-free shakes are really flavoursome. They make tasty and refreshing summer drinks for both adults and children.

Verdict: ★★★★✰

5. Wizards Magic Chocolate

Wizards Magic Chocolate is a brand new 1% sugar, vegan-friendly, gluten-free and high-fibre chocolate, wrapped in 100% recyclable packaging. It is available in three flavours: original, mint and orange. Made in the UK and free of palm oil, the range contains 60% cocoa solid and is also 100% plant-based.

The brainchild behind this new range is former international rugby player Charlie Simpson-Daniel who has a passion for ‘better for you’ foods that deliver unique health benefits but never sacrifice on taste. The team supporting Wizards Magic Chocolate also includes Rugby World Cup Winner, Mike Tindall.

We tried both the Orange and Mint bars. Both were delicious, bursting with essential oil flavours and without the bitterness of some low-sugar chocolates. Thumbs up all around!

Verdict: ★★★★✰
