A Meat-Free Diet Will Put a Spring In Your Step

The growing demand for plant-based, meat-free products is undeniable, and although there is widespread debate surrounding the potential health benefits, health experts agree that a diet high in vegetables is the way to go for improved nutrition. If you’re considering trying a dairy and meat-free diet, we’ve pulled together just a few reasons to take the plunge!

It’s better for your heart

A hearty diet of vegetables, legumes, fruits and whole grains does wonders for your heart. A meat-free diet is high in potassium, lowers blood pressure, improves total cholesterol and reduces the risk of both heart attacks and strokes. However, this doesn’t mean veggie diets scrimp on flavour! Tasty curries using creamed coconut and fresh vegetables, such as this Butternut Squash and Coconut Dal, are incredibly easy to prepare and great for your health.

While great for your internal health, a meat-free diet is full by vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that will help you look your best too. This winning combination will leave you with a healthy glow that even the best beauty products on the market can’t rival. This is because the same phytochemicals that protect plants work overtime on your skin, leaving you with enviably radiant skin!

Vegans and vegetarians have repeatedly scored lower on depression and mood profiles compared to fish and meat-eaters. Not only this, but vegans and vegetarians have also reported significantly lower levels of oestrogen, which some theorise can be pinned down to the lower fat content in their diets. This means a meat-free diet can balance your hormones, and make you a happier person. What better way to put a spring in your step?

It has environmental benefits

Industrial-scale agriculture now dominates livestock and poultry industries, and a single farm can now generate as much waste as a city. Opting for a plant-based diet reduces the demand for meat and dairy, meaning these industries are encouraged to become more sustainable. This can then help to shrink their impact on the environment.

Plant-based diets can help prevent disease

A meat and dairy-free diet contains fewer saturated fats, and this has been shown to reduce the risk of heart disease. Furthermore, data has shown that vegans and vegetarians suffer from fewer of the diseases associated with a Western diet, such as hypertension, diet-related cancers, gall stones, type 2 diabetes and more. This is because those who consume a meat-free diet have a higher intake of fibre and antioxidants. Whereas meat products, on the other hand, can carry foodborne illnesses, bacteria, parasites and chemical toxins that can be harmful to health.
