Eating out can be challenging, especially if you are on a vegan or dairy-free diet. There is also that awkward decision-making when trying to get together with friends, colleagues or family who have different dietary lifestyles. As of this summer, Pizza Express is putting an end to challenging dinner plans by offering vegan pizza options across its entire menu.
A few weeks ago, I headed to Pizza Express Wallington with a “non-vegan” friend to try it out. Quite honestly, we were both sceptical about how good this was going to be but we tried to keep an open mind. Having tried quite a few brands of vegan cheese over the past few years, I have often been disappointed especially when trying to cook with it. Taste, texture and the way it melts is never quite right.
We both selected the Giardiniera, a vegan pizza topped with artichokes, asparagus, red onion, garlic oil, black olives and vegan mozzarella on a classic dough and passata base. It is available as Classic or Romana. Full of flavours, neither of us would have guessed that this was vegan or dairy-free. The seasoning added a lovely kick and the cheese topping was creamy enough without being overpowering. Don’t expect anything extra cheesy but instead a tasty dish bursting with aromas. We both really enjoyed our vegan pizza and agreed on giving it ★★★★★
What’s more is that Pizza Express is making its vegan mozzarella – made from sprouting brown rice – available nationwide on all pizzas across the menu (suitable ingredients allowing) so that anyone can request it on all core menu dishes where the cheese is used, including pizzas and also some pastas. You can check out the full menu here. There are even gluten-free options that have earned the restaurant chain a Coeliac UK accreditation.
To complete the perfect vegan night out, Pizza Express is also offering a vegan-friendly Organic Verdicchio white wine as well as a dairy-free Coconut Delight sorbet dessert.
Next time you are looking out for a vegan or dairy-free friendly venue, don’t forget to check out your local Pizza Express.
Thanks to Pizza Express for treating us to a complimentary dinner. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
