Vegan lunch options have just become a little bit easier as Tofurky launched this week a range of four protein-packed vegan sandwiches: TLT (Tempeh ‘bacon’, Lettuce and Tomato), Chipotle Chick’n, Ham-style Salad, and Chick’n and Sweetcorn.
Tofurky is an American company that started in the 1980s when Seth Tibbott decided to make tempeh from scratch to share with his friends and family. Fast forward 35 years, Tofurky now offers a whole range of plant-based food from burgers, deli slices, pizzas to hot dogs. The soybeans used in Tofurky’s products are organic, 100% GMO-free and grown in the US.
Out and about, I am always frustrated by the lack of convenience meat-free food. Don’t get me wrong I love a good falafel wrap but it does get repetitive. Meat substitutes are not to everyone’s taste but with 3.5 billions sandwiches (yes billions!) purchased in the UK each year, it is certainly good to have more plant-based options, especially if they can bring together vegans, vegetarians and flexitarians.
Now I guess the question on your mind is “Are these any good?”. Well, I did try and test them last week. Here is my verdict!
I was not sure about this one at first as the “ham” slices are bright orange. Yet this sandwich was surprisingly tasty. Packed with tomatoes and spinach, it has plenty of mustardy punch which works really well against the smoky flavour of the tofu ham. My favourite!
This is another winner with a punchy chipotle sauce blended with vegan mayonnaise. The tofu chicken and wheat pieces add some satisfying texture. A really tasty lunch I could definitely have more often.
The combination of tempeh ‘bacon’, lettuce and tomato was a bit bland for my taste. If you are craving bacon, this is unlikely to do the trick. Left me rather unsatisfied.
Another classic made perfectly vegan. The chunkiness of the tofu chicken pieces and sweetcorn is really satisfying while the vegan mayo brings some creaminess and tasty flavour. In many ways this sandwich tastes better than the real thing. Loved it.
Tofurky‘s vegan sandwiches are available from this week at Whole Foods Market. You will also find them at Planet Organic, As Nature Intended, Holland and Barrett, selected independent health food stores and Ocado in upcoming months. Enjoy your lunch!
