A Modern Way to Cook – Review + Giveaway

A Modern Way to Cook by Anna Jones

Following the success of her first cookbook “A Modern Way to Eat”, Anna Jones has just published “A Modern Way to Cook”.  I was eager to read it, as I like Anna’s  fresh and modern take on vegetarian cooking. I was not disappointed. “A Modern Way to Cook” is a fantastic collection of over 150 meat free recipes perfect for anyone striving to eat a plant based diet.

Living in London, Anna Jones went from an office job to follow her passion for food, training at Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen. She then worked with top chefs such as Antonio Carluccio, Mary Berry or Yotam Ottolenghi. Nowadays, she is a cook, chef and food stylist.

Hectic lifestyles mean that most of us do not have a lot of time to spend in the kitchen. But this should not be an excuse to resort to processed food or takeaways. Anna Jones’ approach is simple: nourishing, uncomplicated and balanced home-cooked meals where vegetables are the stars of the show.

Debunking the myth that vegetarian cooking is time consuming, recipes are mainly organised by the amount of time they take to cook (10 mins – 15 mins – 20 mins – 20/25 mins – 30 mins – 40 mins – 45 mins).

There is also a section on investment cooking recipes (such as nut butters, crackers, granola, rye bread or coconut yoghurt) that you can make ahead and eat during the week.

Throughout her book, Anna Jones also gives some brilliant ideas on adding and layering flavours so you can create your own omelette, stir fry, at your desk salads, goodness / buddha bowl. Her charts have become a real source of inspiration.

Amongst all the cookbooks about healthy and clean eating, Anna Jones’ “A Modern Way to Cook” stands out for me as a more practical and balanced approach. Expect coconut oil, extra virgin ghee, chia seeds, spelt flour, natural sweeteners but also organic eggs and some dairy.  In addition to delicious vegetarian recipes you’ll also find a wide selection of vegan or gluten-free dishes.

I expected to like “A Modern Way to Cook”. What I did not expect was to like it so much. So much that it has eclipsed Ottolenghi’s Plenty, to become my favourite vegetarian cookbook (sending shock waves through my kitchen).

Whether you are dabbling into the meat free world or are a seasoned vegetarian, “A Modern Way to Cook” is a real gem to inspire your everyday cooking and eating food that makes you feel good. It is one of these cookbooks that ends up living on your kitchen counter.

Thanks to Anna Jones & Fourth Estate for very kindly offering one signed copy of “A Modern Way to Cook” . See details of the competition below. Good luck!

Notice: Thanks to Fourth Estate for sending a complimentary copy of this book. I was not paid to review this book, all opinions and thoughts are my own.
