If you are already giving up meat one or twice a week, are you ready to go one step further and give up meat for a whole month?
Friends of the Earth is inviting you to take on the Challenge of Meat Free May, a campaign led by Young Friends of the Earth – their grassroots group for people aged 18-30.
Reducing our consumption of meat (and fish) can make a big difference to both the environment and our health. And yes you can still enjoy the food you love while threading more lightly on the planet’s ressources.
Why Meat Free May?
Meat production and overfishing is causing significant damage to the environment and is putting an enormous strain on our already depleting natural resources. It is estimated that 14.5% of greenhouse gases emitted each year come from meat production and overfishing has led to a decrease in fish stocks, with experts estimating that many fish species are close to extinction.
The increasing concern of global food security shows more needs to be done to ensure we have enough to feed ourselves whilst ensuring there are enough resources for future generations to be able to feed themselves. It is predicted that by 2050, there’ll be 9 billion people on the planet, but by carefully using the invaluable resources we have, we can take steps to ensure that our diets are sustainable both now and into the future.
Meat Free May want to show people that reduction is more than possible, so they’re inviting everyone to try a month with meat and fish off the menu.
