In a bid to alleviate demand on decreasing fish stocks, Quorn has just launched a Vegan Fishless Fillets range. Quorn Vegan Salt & Vinegar Battered Fishless Fillets and Quorn Vegan Lemon & Pepper Breaded Fishless Fillets are now available from major supermarkets nationwide. Instead of fish, Quorn uses mycoprotein with added seaweed extract to create a fishy flavour.
As consumption rises, global fish production is approaching its sustainable limit, with around 90% of the world’s stocks now fully or overfished. Wild fish is not only caught for direct human consumption but also to produce animal feed as well as fishmeal for aquaculture. Decreasing our consumption of animal proteins is paramount to developing new sustainable diet solutions that are not only healthy but also help combat overfishing and restore fish stocks and marine health.
Quorn Vegan Salt & Vinegar Battered Fishless Fillets and Quorn Vegan Lemon & Pepper Breaded Fishless Fillets are both very convincing as fish substitutes. My personal preference goes to the Salt & Vinegar Battered Fishless Fillets which are more flaky than the Lemon & Pepper Breaded Fishless Fillets. Both products are low in saturated fats and high in fibre. However, it is important to remember that contrary to fish they do not contain essential fatty acids such as omegas 3 & 6.
