Spoon Guru – The App To Manage Diet & Food Allergies

Spoon Guru

Food shopping is a minefield especially if you have a food allergy or intolerance or simply follow a vegetarian or vegan diet. Even if you are extremely careful when reading labels, it is very easy to miss ingredients or allergens you are trying to avoid.

“Vegetarian Society Approved” or “Vegan Society” seals are certainly very helpful alongside Gluten Free, Nut Free labels but unfortunately not all products are labelled. Managing a free-from diet becomes even more complex when dealing with less common allergies and intolerances.

I have just discovered Spoon Guru, a smart food search and discovery app which enables you to scan products for different types of  food allergies, intolerances, dietary requirements or even just if you are trying to monitor your food.

The app is completely free and available on the app store and on android.

YouTube video

Once you have downloaded Spoon Guru, you can set up your profile with the food you would like to avoid.

Food intolerances include celery, egg, fish, gluten, lupin, milk, mustard, nuts, seeds, sesame, shellfish, soya and sulphites, as well as pulses, beans & peas.

You can also tailor the app according to the following diets: low fat, low sugar, organic, paleo, pescetarian, vegan, vegetarian, vegetarian (lacto) and vegetarian (ovo).

You can easily update your food requirements, which is ideal if members of your family have different specific needs.

Once your profile is saved, you just have to scan the barcodes of the products you are thinking of buying. Smart and intuitive, Spoon Guru analyses ingredients in detail to let you know if they are suitable for you or not.

Spoon Guru goes one step further, showing the list of ingredients and full nutritional breakdown of the product.

My main frustration with food apps, is that they often do not have enough products on file. Here I was very impressed by Spoon Guru, as their database does contain over 150,000 products.

You will also find some additional features such as a recipe selection tailored to your needs. Again, Spoon Guru shows the full list of ingredients and nutritional breakdown for each recipe.

You can also “favourite” recipes and products so it is easier to find them again later.

You can find out more the Spoon Guru website, like them on Facebook or follow them on  Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest.

Spoon Guru is available on the app store and on android.
