The Best Vegetarian Food To Take On A Camping Holiday

April 22, 2026 · The Flexitarian Leave a Comment

Fresh air sharpens your appetite, and simple meals somehow taste better when you cook them outdoors. You don’t need complicated ingredients to eat well on a camping trip. With a bit of thought, you can pack satisfying plant-based food that travels easily, cooks quickly and keeps you energised for long days outside.

Planning Your Vegetarian Camping Menu

You’ll set yourself up for an easier trip if you plan your meals before you leave. Start by sketching out what you’ll eat each day, then build a short shopping list around meals you already enjoy at home. This should help you avoid overpacking and wasting food.

Think about balance rather than perfection. Combine slow-release carbs like couscous or pasta with protein sources such as lentils or chickpeas, and add fresh vegetables where you can. A simple lentil salad with roasted peppers gives you both substance and flavour without needing much cooking time. Aim to include a mix of hot meals and no-cook options so you can adapt to weather or energy levels.

Top Vegetarian Foods That Travel Well

Certain foods make your life much easier at the campsite. Pre-cooked grains like quinoa or rice pouches heat quickly and save fuel. Tinned beans work in everything from wraps to stews, while hard cheeses such as cheddar last longer without refrigeration and add richness to simple dishes.

Fresh vegetables like carrots, peppers and courgettes hold up well in a cool box, and you can slice them into wraps with hummus for a quick lunch. You might also want to prepare meals in advance, such as a chickpea curry or vegetable pasta, then store them in sealed containers ready to reheat. Nuts, flapjacks and dried fruit give you reliable snacks that don’t spoil easily.

If you’re short on space, focus on ingredients that multitask. A jar of pesto can stir through pasta, spread into sandwiches or spoon over grilled vegetables, while tortillas work just as well for breakfast wraps as they do for evening meals. Instant soups and miso sachets are also worth packing, especially for evenings when the temperature drops and you want something warming with minimal effort. Even a simple bowl of hot broth can make a campsite feel more comfortable after a long day of walking. By choosing foods that earn their place, you reduce clutter while keeping meals varied and satisfying.

To keep food fresh, pack items tightly in a cool bag, keep it shaded and open it only when needed. Even without a fridge, this approach buys you extra time.

Practical Tips For Cooking And Eating Outdoors

You don’t need much equipment to cook well outside. A single portable stove, a sturdy pan and a sharp knife cover most meals. Adapt your usual recipes by simplifying steps – for example, cook everything in one pot to reduce washing up and save fuel.

If you cook over a campfire, wrap vegetables or halloumi in foil with a little oil and seasoning, then place them on the embers for an easy, flavourful dish. Label dry ingredients at home, pre-measure spices into small containers and keep washing-up minimal, so cooking stays quick and stress-free, even when light fades and everyone’s hungry after long days.

Weather and plans can change quickly, so you’ll feel more relaxed when you’ve sorted essentials like food storage. Get it sorted well in advance before you leave, alongside other practicalities like campervan insurance and emergency supplies.

Making Mealtimes Memorable

Food brings people together, especially outdoors. You can turn simple dishes into something more social by sharing platters of wraps, dips and grilled vegetables. One evening, you might make your own flatbreads, and on another, you could serve a relaxed pasta night with different toppings.

Small touches make a difference. Pack a few spices, a good olive oil or a favourite sauce to lift basic ingredients. Try something new while you’re away, whether that’s a different spice blend or a recipe you haven’t made before, and you’ll create meals that feel like part of the adventure.

Experiment with new ideas, see what works for you and share those discoveries with others. Each outing gives you another chance to refine your approach and enjoy good food in great surroundings.
