Is This Egg Still Good To Eat? The 10 Second Test

Is This Egg Still Good To Eat v800

Our obsession with “Best Before Date” and “Sell By Date” means that we throw perfectly good food away.

According to WRAP 56% of eggs are thrown away because they are “out of date”. That’s an incredible amount considering eggs are still good to eat weeks after the date printed on the box.

So how many days past their “Best Before Date” are eggs still good to eat? Well, there is no simple answer to this as it varies from egg to egg.

Is This Egg Still Good To Eat? The 10 Second Test

The good news is that there is a very simple test that takes only 10 seconds.

All you need is the egg and a bowl / tall glass full of water.

  1. Place the egg in a bowl / tall glass of water.
  2. An egg that stays at the bottom, is still fresh.
  3. An egg that stays at the bottom (but upright), should be eaten very soon.
  4. An egg that floats at the top, is not good for eating and should be thrown away.

Why do old eggs float?
As they age, eggs produce gasses causing air pockets inside them to become bigger thus increasing buoyancy.

See my YouTube video below of this quick and easy test.
