Easy Homemade Pizza Dough

A few simple ingredients

In my opinion, store-bought crusts can never quite capture the texture and taste of a freshly prepared dough. That’s why learning how to make pizza dough from scratch is a game-changer.

It’s simpler (and cheaper) than you might think, requiring only a few basic ingredients that are likely already in your pantry: flour, water, yeast, salt, sugar, and a little olive oil.

To make the crust crispy, I sprinkle 1 tablespoon of semolina onto my work surface before rolling out the dough.

A versatile easy homemade pizza dough

One of the best things about this easy homemade pizza dough recipe is its versatility. It can be used as the base for a wide range of pizzas, from classic Margherita with fresh tomatoes, mozzarella, and basil to more adventurous creations with gourmet cheeses, roasted vegetables, or spicy toppings. Prefer a thinner, crispier crust? Roll the dough out a bit more before baking. Want a thick, chewy crust reminiscent of a deep-dish pizza? Keep it slightly thicker and allow it to rise a bit longer. Stuffed crust lover? Simple! Just add some extra cheese around the border and fold in the crust. The options are endless.

This easy homemade pizza dough is also a fantastic recipe to make with kids of all ages. Everyone can get involved and pile on their favourite toppings.

Yield and storage

This recipe yields enough dough to make 3 pizzas of 35cm /14 inches diameter.

Once the dough is made up to Step 6, you can store it in the fridge in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Alternatively, you can also wrap each dough ball tightly in plastic wrap, and place them in a freezer-safe bag or airtight container to prevent freezer burn. Dough can be frozen for up to 3 months.

I hope you like this easy homemade pizza dough recipe as much as we do. If you do make it, don’t forget to tag me on Instagram!

Instructions

  • Mix the flour, yeast, salt, and sugar in a large bowl.
500 g strong white bread flour, 2 tsp fast action dried yeast, 1 tsp salt, 1 tsp sugar
  • Make a well in the centre of the dry ingredients, then pour in the lukewarm water and 2 Tbsp of olive oil. Mix all the ingredients together until the dough comes together. Add more water or flour as necessary.
300 ml lukewarm water, 2 Tbsp olive oil
  • Once the dough comes together as one ball, start kneading with by hand or with a food mixer fitted with a dough hook.
  • To knead by hand, tip the dough on a floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes. If using a food mixer, knead the dough for 5 minutes.
  • Once the dough is smooth and silky, place it in a clean and lightly oiled bowl. Cover with cling film and place it somewhere warm. Leave it to rise for about 1 hour or until it has doubled in size. It should double in size.
  • Once the dough has risen, deflate it by knocking it back down with your first. Knead the dough back into a ball and divide into 3 even balls.
  • Sprinkle 1 Tbsp of semolina on your work surface. Using a rolling pin, roll out the first dough ball into a thin pizza crust big enough to fit your pizza tray. Repeat with the other two dough balls to make 3 pizza bases.
    3 Tbsp semolina
  • Brush some oil each pizza tray before placing the dough on it.
  • Add your favourite toppings and cook for around 12 mins in a preheated oven at 220°C/425°F/Gas 7.
