Seasonal Recipes for March

Goodbye February, March is the turning point between winter and spring, bringing a unique mix of comforting, hearty ingredients and the first fresh flavours of the new season. In the UK, this is the perfect time to cook with vibrant greens like kale and purple sprouting broccoli, alongside sweet, tangy rhubarb and versatile vegetables like leeks and spinach.

Whether you’re looking for cosy dinners for chilly evenings or lighter, brighter meals as the days get longer, these March seasonal recipes will help you make the most of what’s fresh, affordable and full of flavour right now until April.

What’s in season in March in the UK

Eating seasonally in March means enjoying produce at its best—both in taste and nutritional value. It’s also a more sustainable and budget-friendly way to cook.

Vegetables in season

  • Leeks – Mild, sweet and perfect for soups, pies and stews
  • Purple sprouting broccoli – Nutty and slightly bitter, ideal for roasting or pasta dishes
  • Kale – A hardy green packed with nutrients, great in stir-fries and salads
  • Spinach – Fresh and delicate, perfect for quick, healthy meals
  • Swede – Earthy and comforting, ideal for mashes and slow-cooked dishes

Fruits in season

  • Rhubarb – Sharp and vibrant, perfect for desserts or sweet-savoury dishes
  • Citrus fruits – Juicy and colourful, great for salads and dressings

Also look out for cauliflower, celeriac, chicory, Jerusalem artichoke, spring onion, sweet potato, wild garlic, PLUS banana, kiwi, passion fruit and pineapple.
