What is tempeh bacon?
The “B” in this BLT, is for vegan bacon or tempeh bacon. It is not only healthier than conventional bacon but also delicious and really straightforward to make. You can find the full recipe instructions here.
Tempeh is a plant-based protein source made from fermented soybeans. Known for its nutty flavour and firm texture, it is a popular meat substitute in vegetarian and vegan diets. It is firmer than tofu, making it the perfect plant-based substitute for this vegan BLT sandwich.
How to make this vegan BLT sandwich
If you already have some tempeh bacon on hand, simply reheat it either in the microwave or in a pan.
For spread and condiment, I am using my vegan mayo, but you can, of course, a storebought mayonnaise instead.
The rest is pretty straightforward as all you have to do is spread the mayo on four slices of your favourite bread (I like sourdough). Then simply pile two of the slices with lettuce, tempeh bacon rashers, tomato slices and more lettuce. Finally, top it off with the second slice of bread and enjoy this tasty and cruelty-free sandwich!
This vegan BLT sandwich can be served on its own or with a side of crispy sweet potato fries, a fresh green salad, roasted vegetables or a bowl of soup.
