The Flexitarian ยป Seasonal Recipes for February ยป Page 17

Seasonal Recipes for February

February is the final stretch of winter in the UK, bringing a mix of hearty, comforting ingredients and the first early signs of spring produce. Itโ€™s the perfect time for warming meals like soups, stews and roasted vegetables, while also beginning to introduce lighter, fresher flavours. For more inspiration check out my healthy winter reset January recipes.

Seasonal ingredients like leeks, cabbage, root vegetables and citrus fruits are still at their best, while purple sprouting broccoli and forced rhubarb start to appearโ€”offering a glimpse of the season ahead such as my early spring March seasonal recipes.

Whether youโ€™re looking for cosy dinners, healthy meals or simple seasonal recipes, this February guide will help you cook with whatโ€™s fresh, affordable and full of flavour right now.

Whatโ€™s in season in February in the UK

February is still firmly a winter month, but with a slightly wider variety of produce than January.

Vegetables in season

  • Leeks โ€“ Mild and sweet, perfect for soups and pies
  • Cabbage and kale โ€“ Ideal for hearty dishes and sides
  • Carrots and parsnips โ€“ Great roasted or in soups
  • Potatoes โ€“ A staple for comforting meals
  • Celeriac โ€“ Earthy and perfect for mash or roasting
  • Purple sprouting broccoli โ€“ One of the first signs of spring
  • Cauliflower and swede โ€“ Versatile and filling

Fruits in season

  • Apples and pears (stored) โ€“ Great for cooking
  • Forced rhubarb โ€“ Bright, sharp and perfect for desserts
  • Citrus fruits (oranges, lemons, grapefruit) โ€“ Add freshness and colour

February produce is still dominated by root vegetables and winter greens, but with new additions like purple sprouting broccoli hinting at spring. Look out also for Brussels sprouts,ย chicory, sweet potato, PLUS banana, blood orange, kiwi, lemon, orange, passion fruit, pomegranate, pineapple, Sevilla orange.
