Seasonal Recipes for September

September is the transition from summer to autumn in the UK, bringing a unique mix of fresh, vibrant produce and the first signs of heartier, comforting ingredients. It’s one of the most abundant months for seasonal food, with everything from juicy tomatoes and berries to apples, squash and root vegetables starting to appear. For summer glut recipes check out my August recipe collection.

This is the perfect time to enjoy both light, fresh meals and more warming dishes as the weather begins to cool. Whether you’re looking for easy dinners, healthy recipes or ways to use up seasonal produce, these September recipes will help you cook with what’s best right now. Planning ahead? My October autumn comfort recipes are just what you are looking for.

What’s in season in September in the UK

September is one of the most abundant months for British produce, as late summer crops overlap with early autumn harvests.

Vegetables in season

  • Tomatoes – Still at their peak early in the month
  • Courgettes – Continuing from summer, often in abundance
  • Peppers and aubergine – Great for roasting and traybakes
  • Sweetcorn – Juicy and perfect for simple dishes
  • Runner beans and green beans – Fresh and crisp
  • Beetroot – Earthy and perfect for salads or roasting
  • Cabbage and cauliflower – Early autumn staples
  • Carrots and potatoes – Versatile and widely available

Fruits in season

  • Apples – One of the defining fruits of September
  • Pears – Sweet and perfect for desserts or salads
  • Plums and damsons – Ideal for baking and compotes
  • Blackberries and raspberries – At their best in early autumn
  • Figs and grapes – Sweet and rich late-summer fruits

September is often described as a “bountiful month” with a huge range of fresh produce available. Look out also for artichoke, beetroot, broccoli, butternut squash, leek, mangetout, marrow, parsnip, and mushrooms.
